​Communication: Digital Filmmaking majors study film as visual language, learning the principles and techniques of film-making and gaining practical experience in planning, shooting, lighting, editing, and sound mixing short video productions.

 

What do Communication: Digital Filmmaking B.I. students study?

The Bachelor of Innovation™ (BI) in Communication – Digital Film Making a cross-disciplinary degree that combines film making, engineering and business. A cross-college collaboration between the Department of Communications in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering and the College of Business, this cutting-edge curriculum combines academic studies, technical skills and professional training to prepare students for variety of careers in the film and television industry. Students develop comprehensive skills in film and television creation through hands-on production courses as well as develop valuable breadth in other arts disciplines, business and creative entrepreneurship. Moreover, BI COMM Digital Film Making students will participate in several high- level collaborative projects, internships and produce professional work that will give them a distinct advantage launching careers in the competitive changing world of the film and television Industry.

Courses

  1. Introduction to Film & Video COMM 2250

    A study of the principles and techniques of film-making, including practical experience in planning, shooting, lighting, editing, and sound mixing. The study of film as visual language will be integrated with experience and making short video productions.

  2. Screenwriting COMM 3300

    A course in writing for non-print media. Students will learn key elements of screenwriting, story structures, and exposition.

  3. Digital Film Production COMM 4270

    Students work in teams to write, produce, and direct a short narrative digital film. There is a focus on the art and craft of storytelling, integrating all the writing, camera, lighting, sound, and directing elements learned in courses leading up to this one.

  4. Advanced Editing and Colorization COMM 4460

    Students learn advanced editing and colorization techniques and apply them as they edit episodes of The Bluffs student-produced TV series. This class prepares students to work as professional editors.
